Why do we choose Wan Chai Market?
1. Precious values from the past
It's obvious that old Wan Chai Market contains valuable elements that deserve to be preserved in order to let the future generations to know more about Hong Kong's heritage. To acknowledge these elements, our group has drawn out the Architectural, Historical and Cultural singificances of this heritage site. For more details, please refer to this page.
2. Local culture
Old Wan Chai Market does demonstrate the unique "Market Culture". In traditional Chinese market, people in the community
loved gathering, dealing and communicating in the Market. It is interesting that there were no rigid management inside the market so farmers, fishermen or craftsmen just carried the goods they wanted to exchange in the market and occupied a site with favorable conditions on a first-come-first-served basis. Perhaps it is more appropriate to say the rules of space management, waste control or good-displaying were kept according to unspoken social norms in the community. In other words, it reflects a sense of human scale and local familiarity
3.Reevaluation on the project
According to Sin’s study, the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) aimed at completing several redevelopment projects in Wan Chai by using the 4Rs strategy and up till now Wan Chai is only district that has covered all strategies. To make it clear, the 4Rs strategy is Redevelopment, Rehabilitation, Revitalization and pReservation. Here are some specific locations of the implementation of the strategy.
-
Redevelopment: Wai Chai Road, Queen's Road East (including old Wan Chai Market)
-
Rehabilitation: Shun Lee Building
-
Revitalization: King Sing Street (Blue House)
-
pReservation: pawn shops in Johnston
From the information above, we can see that there are many methods that can help redevelop or improve the heritage sites. Here comes the questions. Is it appropriate to implement the “redevelopment” method instead of others on the whole Queen’s Road East and Wan Chai Road while that place consist of many local facilities?

Term Project Outline
On the left hand side of this page, we give some reasons for choosing Wan Chai Martet as our case study.
Then we recommend the readers to click the "Redevelopment" page to know more about the background of the redevelopment project first.
After having the basic understanding of the project, our group would like to use 5Ws + 1H to demonstrates the dynamics between different stakeholders.
In the end, the conclusion and reflection will be given to ground up all the information.
