Chinese virtues - qing (affection)

Chinese virtues make a quite crucial turn for the tone of the movie. Qing (情) binds three parallel lines of the main stars to join together and this help construct a more round-up story. The ending is also quite Chinese compared with the original version. In the last sence, the main male starring named Bob, talked with Grace, the main actress, and said: “I made a promise.” This sentence translated into the Chinese version that is “I just tried to do my best.” (盡人事). This is the most important message that the director wants to deliver to audience because it echoes with the beginning that son of Bob always questions the liability of Bob as he broke his promises many times. Therefore, we audience see that Bob can finally rescue Grace as her family, it illustrates that he had changed to be a better person since he can realize his promise. Moreover, in the director commentary in the DVD, Benny Chan also stated that only the virtues of humans can explain why Bob would save Grace by all means just because of a call. Virtues of human beings are inborn and this cannot be explained in the scientific way. This matches with the Confucianism as this philosophy put emphasis on Rén (仁) and confirmed that every individuals would feel sympathetic when others are suffering (惻隱之心). In short, this is about the story that everyone should offer help with others are in need in the reality. Though we are just an ordinary citizen and we maybe imperfect personally, we can still be the heroes to change other lives and save other from dangers. (鄭敬恆,2009)

Bob's son always critized and blamed his dad because he break his promises again and again. "A Promise is a promise" becomes the key idea in the film as it explain why Bob finally gone all out for resucing Grace. (Director Commentary form Connected)

If the audience can feel the affection between different characters in the movie, they will be happy with that arrangement. (Director Commentary form Connected)

He (Bob) broke his promises with his son for missing the chance for farewell  in the airport. Surprisingly, it makes Bob feel that he should not break another promise (saving Grace) in the future. (Director Commentary form Connected)

The main actor of this film is quite different from the traditional screenplay. He is just a ordiany person with many shortcomings. With this special arrangement, audience gradually understand that everyone can be the hero. (Director Commentary form Connected)

Just because of the virtues of human, this man (Bob) can insist in saving Grace from dangerous situation. After all, it is hard for people to do such thing for a stranger you have never met before. (Director Commentary form Connected)
