Localized modifications of action film

Several parts of the screenplay were modified in a more localized means yet some important plots were kept. For example, in the interview with Benny Chan in Singapore (Chong & Lim, 2008), Chan claimed that the main character was being deliberately re-written as a common Hong Kong person rather than a slacker so that audience would be easier to be familiar with the film and feel that they are also the insiders in the film. The personalities of the characters are more impressive comparing with the original one. Some minor changes of the characteritics of the main actor are influencial in linking different sences. For instance, the decision of Louis Koo (acted as Bob) to offer helping hands to Barbie Hsu, a stranger who suddenly called for help by phone with unknown number, is justified by his personality. Compared with Cellular, Connected is also relatively wise in the sense of arranging the risky actions and the sequence of plots so the emotions of audiences are highly controlled by the director (鄭敬恆, 2009). Although many settings of Connected were same with Cellular, for instance, cars rushing on the highways, buying charger with a gunshot and running and catching in the airport, it should be noted the directors tried to make uses of these kind of visual images to let the audience feel the tension in Hong Kong urban landscape. Here are some captures of Director Commentary from Connected to demonstrate the how Benny Chan would like to design the setting and scopes of his production and the reasons behind.

The action movie produced in Hong Kong should be more powerful and intersifed compared with the Hollywood one. (Director Commentary form Connected)

Every plot in the film should be monitored by me (Benny Chan) and my production crew and we have to tried to link every polt tightly.  (Director Commentary form Connected)

There are many impressive plot can be kept in my production. Just add some modifications which are suitable for Hong Kong culture, I think those plots  would be enhanced and the whole story would be better.(Director Commentary form Connected)

Which visual images place first and which come later do matter the presentation of the film. I hope that the final version will appeal to the audiences. (Director Commentary form Connected)

The overall requirements and designs of motion and stunt are relatively strong compared with the Hollywood one.(Director Commentary form Connected)

I have taken many a aerial shots in the last phase of my production. I want to use these image to let the audience have a general preception of Hong Kong. They would understand Connected is a Hong Kong movie and start to feel curious about the story. (Director Commentary form Connected)
