Curry/Original flavor    $6 per ball

Big fish ball was our favorite food in Tai O and it was the only food we ate twice in this trip. Although it was supposed to be the most famous food in another island - Cheung Chau, but the fish ball in Tai O was even better.

After we got off the ferry, the stimulating spicy smell of curry came into our noses. After few seconds walk, we saw a bunch of people lined up for the big fish ball. The shop provided a choice of curry and original local flavor. The giant fish balls looked bigger when they were in the pot, but when they were taken away from the pot, it shrunk one third of the size.

Normally, people bought $12 for 2 with one spicy and one non-spicy were the perfect combination. Two balls were connected by a thin bamboo stick which was same as the normal fish ball we can buy in other districts. Two fist sized fish balls could already filled up the length of a bamboo stick.

They were rich in fish aroma. The outer part of the fish balls was super crispy, we could even heard the sound when we bit it. It’s curry sauce was quite spicy that some of us couldn’t finish the whole ball and it made our lips turned red. But for spicy flavor lover, these curry fish balls were your dream food that you couldn’t control yourself to keep thinking of its spiciness even after a week from your last bite.

I am not a fish ball lover but the big fish ball in Tai O? Definitely my all time favorite.

Tips

$12 for 2 is quite a bargain but you can even save more if you buy it after 6 p.m.! Shops in Tao O close around 6 p.m. therefore they lower the price to $10 for 2 to clear the stock.

Note that fish balls were much spicier in evening compare with afternoon. Please prepare enough tissue for your running nose.
