Tai O Auntie

  • Indigenous inhabitant

  • Owner of a snack stall

  • Sell tofu pudding, preserved plum, drinks…

We didn’t ask her name.

We met her at a snack stall and she was selling tofu pudding.

When we stood in front of the stall, she smiled and asked us what we wanted to buy.

We said we wanted to have interview with her, ask her something about Tai O.

She nodded.

She was an indigenous inhabitant.

She came out to sell products only on Saturday and Sunday because many tourists came to Tai O in weekend.

In normal days, she stayed at home and prepare for the products.

We: What do you think about the living of Tai O?

Auntie: It was simple. Every day like the same. Wake up in the morning, do some preparation in the afternoon and go to sleep at night.

We: Do you enjoy Tai O life?

Auntie: Of course yes. I like simple life and you don’t have to worry anything else. The life is simply as well as Tai O people. Even if you dress the same clothing in one week, no one care about it.

We: It is good, but have thought of moving away from Tai O?

Auntie: Yes, when I was young. I thought I could have more achievement if I worked outside the Tai O. But I didn’t because I thought Tai O life was more suitable for me after consideration. I don’t like pressure. Living in Tai O, I can enjoy the life.

She has a son, who is working in Kowloon.

Her son back to Tai O only in weekend and she hoped her son can stay at Tai O in the future.

Auntie: We have to stay at Tai O is not only because of our desire of simple life here, but also because of the preservation of Tai O. If everyone move away, who will be the one to protect Tai O?

Our conversation didn’t last too long because many tourists wanted to buy tofu pudding.

We felt sorry for disturbing and thanks for her sharing.

Auntie: Remember to come here again, tofu pudding is free of charge when the next time I see you.
