Begonia is an herb which grows only in China. Due to the leaf color which is green on one side and purple on the other, Mountain Begonia drink also has a beautiful purple red color. As Mountain Begonia was found on Lantau Island, villagers used to harvest it, and brew it into a herbal tea as a popular thirst quencher in Tai O.

Chinese people believe the use of Begonia can reduce the heatiness from the sun and the food. In Chinese tradition, food contains Yin and Yang, Yang foods are believed to increase body’s heat.

As the day we had our field trip was quite hot, we bought a bottle of cold mountain begonia drink to start our day. It reflected a shiny blood like red color which reminded me of grape juice. With the ingredient of hawthorn山楂, it tasted both sweet and sour which was perfect for its cooling effect in summer.

Fuk Hing Hong’s drink was brew by carbon therefore the amount available was limited to 100 to 200 bottle per day. But don’t worry, actually begonia drink was common in Tai O, we saw it in almost every food stall.

Tips

Finish the drink before it become warm, otherwise the sour flavor will overcame the sweet.
